What does 100 new families look like?
100 new families… what does that look like? We have an extremely large challenge before the congregation– that is, by the end of 2010, give 100 families a new church home. Simply stated, but not simply done, this means every family will help welcome another family into our fellowship. One of our most immediate problems will be the need for parking. It is the ceiling the church has bumped for 12 years or more. We have parking for 230 people on this property at one time. That capacity is reached every time we have a big event… I have always wondered if anyone has circled through our parking lot, not finding a place and then driving home. If every age group will have growth then every Sunday school class will have to make plans for new people. What will that mean for the choir? For worship services? For Wednesdays?
What do you think will be the best part of reaching a goal like this?
What do you think will be the hardest part of reaching this goal?

Up a Creek?
How do you know what you have been created for. One person describes where someone fits in the kingdom of God in this way:
* Your walk motivates you for ministry.
* Your spiritual gifts enable you for ministry.
* Your passions give focus to ministry.
* Your personality expresses itself in ministry.
* Your experiences help develop you for ministry.
How should a church family care for one another?
The sermon series we are in is called Family Days. We talked Sunday about a threat to being family. The ancient church listed one of the seven deadly sins as acedia. The English translation of that word is sloth. It might better be understood as “I don’t care.” Apathy keeps a church from being the family it should be. So how should love be demonstrated in a congregation? What does it look like when a church or church members do not care? (Oh, this probably isn’t a place to go and name names. Let’s talk in the realm of hypothetical.)
Spiritual Preparation Weekend
It is an exciting day when any church makes the decision to take a step of faith in constructing new facilities for better and future ministries. Canyon Creek has indeed made this step of faith. Any church must take effort to raise money, or capital if you will, to aid in this construction. There are many companies that work to gain the trust of a church in their capital fund raising. Canyon Creek chose to align itself with the Baptist General Convention of Texas’ United We Build program in large part because of the spiritual emphasis and biblical principles of finance that it utilizes throughout the campaign.
One of the strongest facets of the UWB program is its Spiritual Preparation Weekend. Canyon Creek will host the Spiritual Preparation Weekend on Saturday-Sunday, September 7-8. Through five sessions, Ivan Potter, our consultant from UWB, will lead the families in our church in discovering and embracing biblical principles of finance. The schedule for the weekend is as follows:
Saturday, September 7, 5:00pm — Evening Meal
Saturday, September 7, 6:00pm — Session 1
Sunday, September 8, Sunday School — Session 2
Sunday, September 8, Morning Worship — Session 3
Sunday, September 8, 5:00pm — Session 4
Sunday, September 8, 6:00pm — Session 5
You may register for the event now in a variety of ways. 1) You can sign up in your Sunday School class. 2) You can sign up at the Information Center in the church foyer. 3) You can contact the church office. 3) You can email the church office. When registering, be sure to sign up for the evening meal on Saturday and for childcare if needed.
Please circle the dates of September 7 and 8 on your calender and make it a priority to attend the Spiritual Preparation Weekend for the United We Build campaign at Canyon Creek.
Turning 30 means…
It is a privilege to be at Canyon Creek and celebrate the 30th anniversary. Maybe we can ask those who were part of the charter group what their hopes were in 1980 as the church constituted… no longer a mission of Immanuel Baptist. Doubtless members would include elements of our mission statement to make disciples. Doubtless they would talk about reaching Temple for Christ. They would be proud of the steps we are taking toward the next 30 years.

Upcoming Youth Ministry Events
Wednesday, August 13, our youth will join three other local churches in a Top Chef type event at Martha’s Kitchen to bring attention to the needs of the homeless in our area. We will meet at the church at 5:30pm and then go to Martha’s Kitchen to set up. We will be serving the food and meeting those that work and live there. We should be back to the church around 8:15pm.
Wednesday August 20, will be our annual Back to School party. It will be Olympic themed with events like Can You Eat That, Hallway Curling, Off The Wall Ping Pong, and High Score Wii Bowling. It should be a memorable night. There will be “medals” for all our champions. All the action begins at 6:30pm. We should be done around 8pm. Parents are welcome to help judge events. There will be snacks and drinks provided.
AWANA Enlistment and More
This summer has been a whirlwind of fun, discipling, and fellowship. As we look forward to a new school year, it is my prayer that these kiddos remember all that we have been doing this summer and all that they have learned at WorshipZone and FUNdamentals. We have finished our FUNdamentals bible study over the first eleven chapters in Genesis. We are also closing up our WorshipZone sessions concluding with the study on Fellowship. Both of these programs have been very meaningful to our kids, and it is my prayer that we can look forward to more great events and programs during the school year.
We have a back to school and AWANA enlistment event on August 20th from 6pm - 8pm. This will be a great time to get questions answered about the AWANA ministry, to celebrate the conclusion of the summer and the start of a new school year, and to preview some events going on during the school year. Everyone is invited to celebrate with us!
Let us all continue to pray and seek God’s guidance in the growth and program opportunities for this children’s ministry in preparation for the upcoming children’s and preschool building. Thank you church for allowing me to be apart of this wonderful ministry.
God in Us Musical This Sunday Evening!
Please make time in your schedule for the musical this Sunday evening. Our choir has been working hard this summer and we want to share this time with you. It promises to be an exciting time of worship for all ages. Even if you do not regularly come to evening worship, you will not want to miss this evening.
Our choir loft will be full of singers from Canyon Creek and First Baptist Church, Salado. We want all of our pews to be full as well, so we are asking our Creek family members to come out and support our choir and music ministry. The congregation from Salado will be gathering with us as we celebrate and worship together. Following the musical, we will have a time to gather in the fellowship hall allowing us to meet the members from Salado.
30th Anniversary Celebration
On August 24, Canyon Creek Baptist Church will celebrate its 30th anniversary. The church will have Sunday School at 9:15 and a unified worship service at 10:30 with lunch on the grounds to follow. Please come as the church celebrates all that the Lord has done for the past 30 years and as it looks forward to the next 30 years and beyond.
A lot of changes have occurred since 1978. In that year, the world’s population was estimated at 4.3 billion. Martina Navratilova and Bjorn Borg were the winners of Wimbledon. In 1978, Sony introduced the first portable stereo, the Sony Walkman. The Academy award for best picture went to Annie Hall. A stamp was $0.13, a gallon of milk was $1.71, and a gallon of gas was $0.63.
Who knows how things will be different in the future? I guess there is One who certainly does and it is for His glory that we exist. God Himself has placed Canyon Creek on these five acres for a wonderful purpose. The next 30 years shall surely be an adventure. Please come and celebrate with the rest of the body on August 24.
“God In Us” Musical with FBC Salado
August 17th our choir will combine with the First Baptist Church, Salado choir and present the musical: God In Us. We are looking forward to an exciting evening of music and praise as we bring our congregations and choirs together for worship. If you do not regularly attend our Sunday Evening worship services, you will not want to miss this one.
You may remember that last summer; we did this and met in Salado. This year, however, we will be gathering here at the Creek. We want to fill the house as we all come together to worship the Lord with exciting music and testimonies. It will be an evening to remember.
