Bathed In Prayer
The vision for starting Canyon Creek Baptist Church began in January 1978. That same year, we were birthed as a mission plant of Immanuel Baptist Church in Temple in order to meet the needs of a then rapidly growing city. Believers first met for Bible study, but soon moved to call their first pastor family. Dr. Jerry Raines was called and faithfully served Canyon Creek for the next 18 years, shepherding the church through fruitful early years.
After a short period of meeting in the board room of the Pondarosa motel, members decided on a location and built the first worship facility in late 1978. By 1988, huge additions to the facilities were made on a cash-only basis. The church became a self-supporting church in August 1980 when a chartering service was held.
Shepherds of the Flock
The lengthy pastorate by Dr. Raines laid the foundation for the healthy church body Canyon Creek is today. Dr. Raines and his family were called to a different ministry in 1996. Our body was blessed to enjoy an interim pastorate by the much-loved professor from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and former pastor of First Baptist Church Belton, Dr. Leroy Kemp. At the turn of the millennium, Dr. Philip Riegel pastored the church for several years. Upon his departure, Bill McGee served as interim. The church next called Dr. Trey Turner and his family to shepherd the church in God's vision. During his time a youth and college section were added onto the building. Dr. Turner faithfully served for seven years, after which the Turners felt God's call to missions in doing church planting in Wisconsin. Rev. Jason Gish, Minister of Education and Administration, next served the church as interim until the church called Dr. Ronnie Hood as pastor. The Hood family arrived at Canyon Creek at an exciting time of its existence as once again the church was extending its facilities. This time a children's building was added to the existing campus. This new building enables continued outreach activities to the next generation and families in the community. God is good!
CAnyon Creek Today
Canyon Creek Baptist Church is affiliated with both the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Southern Baptist Convention. Canyon Creek is a giving church. With regard to missions, members give to local missions, individual causes, the Mary Hill Davis offering, the Lottie Moon offering, and the Annie Armstrong offering, among others.
It is the desire of this body of believers to live an authentic Christian life, share the love of Jesus with a hurting world, and be faithful to God's mission.
Our prayer is that one day every person with whom we come into contact will hear the very words the Lord Jesus spoke in His parable:
